Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This week's adventure takes into the world of Cece Bell's graphic novel turned into an Apple TV+ series titled "El Deafo". It is a semi autobiographical tale of her early life and dealing with her struggles of being deaf. The series also features original music from Waxahatchee a very underrated artist in my opinion! So let's get started on our review and head to Virginia to meet Cece Bell in "El Deafo"
First off I would like to say the character designs are super cute and enjoyable to watch. I love the design of the rabbits and the clean lines of the show are very pleasant to look at. The tone of the show is very colorful yet muted and pastel which I really enjoy.
Now I won't give away the plot but as you can guess from the title and the poster that this is the story of how Cece lost her hearing. It is great to see a story for children addressing this topic for them to understand the issue a little more clearly. Especially when Cece is having trouble lipreading and the dialogue gets muffled, its a really nice touch that she show adds that the graphic novel could not use to portray that struggle the character was having.
Now the best part, in my opinion, is the music. Waxahatchee is an underrated artist and her previous album was fantastic! The full version of the theme song titled "Up in the Sky" is diffidently worth listening to!
Now the series only has 3 episodes out and seems like that's it for now but I will keep a close eye on the series and if Waxahatchee releases anything new for the series!
When I review series I give out up to 10 stars. 1 for each these categories. Length, Setting, Characters, Costuming, Dialogue, Plot, Music, Themes, Sound Design, and overall feeling. "El Deafo" gets a star for characters, dialogue, plot, music, sound design, and overall feeling.
"El Deafo" gets 6 out of 10 stars!
All the Best, Ross
