Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? If it's the Marvel Cinematic Universe you should check out Episode 17! This is for the loads of new music that was released (4 full albums to be exact) Now I didn't get around to all of them to the full extent but I did get to all of them! So I'm just going to talk about them from worst to best in my opinion so let's get started with the worst!
"Chip Tooth Smile" by Rob Thomas
This album is a shadow of what Rob Thomas used to be. Matchbox 20 is my first concert (it was them and Sugar Ray in Virginia Beach). Rob Thomas's first solo album is fantastic! "This Is How A Heart Breaks", "Streetcomer Symphony", and "Now Comes the Night" are fantastic songs. This album however does not have the same style, feel, or heart that his music used to have. The single is "One Less Day (Without Dying)" is a boring single and is the first song on the album and where does that lead the rest of the album? Nowhere. It's just a bland and uneventful pop album that does what it's supposed to do and nothing more. Is this going on my ultimate shelf? Nope. I don't think any of the songs made it to the playlist either.
"Neotheater" by AJR
AJR has such a unique sound and they kind of have broken all of the rules of popular music to create a unique and bizarre sound that somehow works. This is their 3rd studio album and it really shows. Their musical style has fused so many genres together and sounds. My favorite on the album is "Birthday Party" I love the concept of the song of being blissfully unaware of the way the world works. It has some interesting vocal effects, an awesome clarinet lick, and a really cool feel. The whole album just keeps throwing odd sounds and styles together. I unfortunately have not gotten enough time with this album yet but as of now, I think its going to be on the ultimate shelf.
"The Balance" by Catfish and the Bottlemen
This is the album that rock music needs. There hasn't been a true blue rock music album yet this year! (at least not that I've heard). Alice Merton is heavily influenced but is still a pop artist and so is Avril Lavigne, the Weezer album was actually awful, Hozier is more folk and pop, and even Cage the Elephant felt more like a alternative album. Catfish and the Bottlemen are proving the prowess of solid rock music with their 3rd album they prove that rock is still alive and can still make for an interesting and dynamic album. Some of the stand out songs include the single "Longshot", "Conversation", "Fluctuate", and "Sidetrack". It just has a distinct yet classic sound that proves that rock is not dead... yet. This album is for sure making it onto my ultimate shelf and I can't wait to dive deeper into it!
"Run Fast Sleep Naked" by Nick Murphy
This is the best album of the week and is Nick Murphy's (aka Chet Faker) 2nd studio album (even though "Thinking in Textures" is amazing). The artist is one of the best and most underrated song writers of this generation of music and this album does not disappoint. I first heard the single "Sanity" and fell in love with the groove, lyrics, and passion that he clearly shows in his music. The album opens up with a bang with "Hear it Now" and introduces this brilliant sound with some odd wind instruments that will be showcased throughout the album. The next big song is "Sanity" and is of course amazing, "Sunlight" is a little high in the register for him and he somehow nails it! To be fair the album holds up throughout and I can't talk about each song but the use of REAL drums really helps in this style of music (which I've been saying for years) it just adds so much more energy to the songs. This album will be making it onto the ultimate shelf and may be taking the #1 album of the year. As of right now it holds that title. We shall see what the rest of the year brings!
So that was the week in music! It was a big one! Next week I will review "Days Gone" for the PS4 I just didn't get around to it this week so I will be back to talk about that for the next episode! Let me know what you thought of these albums or if there's an album you want me to review! What are your top 10 of the year so far? Keep going on adventures!
All the Best, Ross
