S1 Ep. 31- Of Hobbs and Shaw and Sugar Ray and Men

Welcome back to Thrak Attack, what's your adventure? This week's adventure took me to 2 new musical journeys and a movie. There is also a bit of news I would like to cover as I slide back into the school year and get back into the swing of things. So without further interruptions and digressions, let's get into it!

NEWS!
-There is a new website that plans a vacation for to Japan that is completely Pokemon themed and I need it.
-Disney confirms that alcoholic Green and Blue milk is coming to Galaxy's Edge soon. Once I get there I'm sure there will be a full review of that place!

REVIEWS!

Little Yachty by Sugar Ray

If you watch the most recent video you will know what I think of this album but it comes down to this... Sugar Ray have been tanning and playing music and drinking on cruise ships for the past 5 to 10 years and this album shows that 100%. Every song is a reggae jam or a chill jam that would perfectly in a Caribbean cruise. There is only one standout which is an absolute powerhouse of a song that still fits in with this mediocre album. "Sunday Love" comes into the album as the 5th track almost exactly in the middle of the album. It still has nice reggae sound but it has heart and soul which the others are lacking. The lyrics are cute and clever, there's an interesting harmonica sound throughout, the vocals are great from the full band, the drum part is stellar, and the breakdown and buildup to the final chorus is FANTASTIC! If you don't want to listen to the album please just listen to this song because it is really solid! Is this going on the ultimate shelf? No. But is "Sunday Love" going on it? Of course!

Fever Dream by Of Monsters and Men

I have always been a fan of Of Monsters and Men ever since they hit it big with "Little Talks" on their first album. They've been a fun and very natural sounding band with lots of care in their music. I saw them live a few years ago at the Radio 104.5 Birthday Party concert as the headliner and it was honestly a really great performance that kept the heart of their recordings. This album is way to processed and goes against the sound of their first two albums. This album feels like they are trying to make a hit rather than it just coming naturally like "Little Talks" or "Chrystals". Part of it sounded like a Katy Perry album which does not bode well for the band. Too much focus on the female vocalist and not enough focus on the rest of the band. Electronic backbeats took over for trumpet solos and it shows in the heart of the album. It doesn't hold up as an album for me and I am upset with their conformity to the modern music sound rather than continuing to be the organic Icelandic band we know and love. No, it is not going on the ultimate shelf.

Hobbs and Shaw

Full disclosure, this is my first Fast and Furious movie I've ever seen. I know nothing about this series other than what's in memes and commercials. With that being said, I'm glad I waited until this film to see this film. Again, I know literally nothing about the other films, but this film seemed like it had a different kind of action in it with a more sci-fi twist on it. I don't know if it's true but I really enjoyed this film. Was it totally ridiculous? Yes. Was it stupid? Yes. But did it have a lot of heart and was super fun? Yes! The Rock and Jason Statham have such great chemistry even though they were arguing the entire film. There was a solid story and plot with great character motivations and the emphasis on family. Shaw's sister played by Vanessa Kirby was fantastic and a great barrier between the two main characters. There were also 2 very surprise cameos who I hope will have a bigger role in the series from pretty big named celebrities but I won't spoil that for you. I know its the point of this film to have ridiculous car chases and fight scenes but I didn't feel overwhelmed with gratuitous action like I did with John Wick 3. There was heart and care in these characters and plot lines that all got wrapped up in this film and I'm honestly excited to see what happens next! Is this movie going on my ultimate shelf? Yes! I had so much fun with it!

So that's the week's episode. Keep an eye out in your podcasts for an episode of "Ross and Alan Fix Everything" on Hobbs and Shaw which will probably be in the next few days. Also if you have any suggestions or want to share anything with the blog please post it on the Facebook page! I would happy to hear your feedback on everything Thrak Attack does!

                                                      All the Best, Ross

El Deafo

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This week's adventure takes into the world of Cece Bell's graphic novel turned into an Apple TV+ series titled "El Deafo". It is a semi autobiographical tale of her early life and dealing with her struggles of being deaf. The series also features original music from Waxahatchee a very underrated artist in my opinion! So let's get started on our review and head to Virginia to meet Cece Bell in "El Deafo" First off I would like to say the character designs are super cute and enjoyable to watch. I love the design of the rabbits and the clean lines of the show are very pleasant to look at. The tone of the show is very colorful yet muted and pastel which I really enjoy.  Now I won't give away the plot but as you can guess from the title and the poster that this is the story of how Cece lost her hearing. It is great to see a story for children addressing this topic for them to understand the issue ...

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? Today's adventure takes us deep into the walls and underneath the ground to the land of Fraggle Rock. But this isn't the first time we've been here, we remember this place from long ago and it's time to go back. A reboot of a series that ended in 1987 is just what Apple TV+ needs right? Let's find out! Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock has 13 episodes in it's first season and it's just as charming as you remember. The muppets look as good as ever, the characters a charming, and the world building in this show is actually quite good! Each episode has a fun adventure with a pretty solid through line of exploring "outer space" which is just our world. There are some pretty great jokes that go along with this too. In the pilot episode one of the characters gets attacked by a dog, when telling his friends about it he says "I was attacked by the most vicious space monster" and it cuts to t...

"Covers" by Cat Power

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This adventure takes us to many genres of music covered by Cat Power! From Iggy Pop to Lana Del Rey to Billie Holiday, this album takes to many genres but somehow feels stale through Cat Power's style.  I knew this was a cover album and was excited to hear all the different songs sung in a new style. Unfortunately these songs are more than just the surface songs and singles. These are lesser known songs from big artists. I loved trying to guess who's song it was and then looking it up afterwards. Even though the artists she covers are from all sorts of genres this album is such a drag to listen to. The 12 songs slog on for 43 minutes and never feel like it's going anywhere. It's like she took the personality from the different artists but not any of the passion. I felt very bored listening to the songs. Two of the songs did make it onto my 2022 playlist including "Pa Pa Power" and "White Mustang...
