Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This week's adventures took us to the theater twice with 2 new movies Joker and Gemini Man, 3 new trailers with Jungle Cruise, Birds of Prey, and Onward and a new video game for PS4 called Concrete Genie. Before we get into the reviews though, let's go over some of the news that came up this week!
NEWS!
-The Disney Skyliner broke down leaving guests stranded in the air for hours. The system has since closed and no word on when it will reopen.
-Ginger Baker, legendary drummer of Cream, passes away at the age of 80.
-Disney announces there will be a Moana 2... of course, it's the era of sequels and remakes
-Pokemon officially reveal Galarian Ponyta after it's tease during the 24 hour live stream. It is a psychic type unicorn Pokemon that will be a Shield exclusive.
-Sony has officially revealed what the PS5 will look like and it looks.... interesting.
TRAILERS!
Birds of Prey is the sequel to Suicide Squad, not to be confused with The Suicide Squad. That's a whole different story and universe. I don't want to see this movie due to the insanity of it and why would I want another movie in the style of Suicide Squad (which was not good), but I do really love Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead after seeing one of the movies I watched recently. But seriously DC, take a note from Joker and start making more movies like that.
Onward is Pixar's next film and is their version of Weekend at Bernies which looks like a fun adventure! Of course there will be some heart the story but I just hope they don't lean too heavily on the world building and less on story. Chris Pratt and Tom Holland seem like they're doing a great job with these characters though! I can totally see them as brothers!
Jungle Cruise looks like a solid film. It looks like it takes heavy inspiration from the attraction it's based on but also pokes fun at the insanity of the ride. Although I hope this movie does well. There have been quite a few movies based on attractions and it's been a mixed bag of quality. Although with the Rock and Emily Blunt at the helm of this movie, it looks to be a fun watch in any case.
REVIEWS!
Joker was not a comic book movie, nor was it a horror movie, was it a tragedy? a comedy? Or just a good old fashioned thriller? I have trouble pinpointing what type of film this is and I think that's what makes it such a great film! The acting is incredible in it, Joaquin Phoenix truly transforms into the character of Arthur Fleck, Zazie Beetz does an incredible job, and Robert De Niro is fantastic. The plot of this movie should be simple but there are so many twists, subplots, and story changes in this film that it's not as simple as it seems. It's one of those films that you can watch it multiple different times with multiple different viewpoints or ideas that your looking for and have a different experience with the film every time. When you start thinking of the possibilities or ideas that this movie presents it really makes you think about what the movie truly is. It's hard to truly talk about this film without massive spoilers though but if you like dark and twisty movies that truly make you want to analyze a character than this is the film for you! This movie is diffidently going on my ultimate shelf!
Concrete Genie is the one of the most charming games I've played in a while. The story is simple yet complex, the gameplay is easy to handle yet engaging, and the visuals are just stunning. My favorite part of this game is that it's a very creative game. Even though you only need to do a few artistic things to get by, the game makes you want to change the visuals of the whole landscape. It is honestly making me consider getting PSVR due to the amount of the gameplay that would enhance. (seriously though, is it worth $150 to be able to play Skyrim, Concrete Genie, Astro Bot, and Iron Man?) Anyways, I love casual and passive games such as this where it's more about the creativity you bring to the game that makes it interesting. It was a very natural progression to go from Minecraft to this. Will this game be going on my ultimate shelf? Yes, and possibly with a new VR system.
Gemini Man was a movie that should have been made 20 years ago but I'm glad it wasn't. The special effects used to create this film would not have done the film justice in 1997. The film was beautifully shot with great scenery and locations, action set pieces, and de-aging effects. Although the story is a little thin and simple, the action and characters make up for it. Almost everyone in this film does an outstanding job! Will Smith is great at 50 and at 25 years old, Benedict Wong is hilarious, but the one that shone the brightest for me was Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She is absolutely fantastic and stunning in this film and I can officially can say she is one of my favorites now. With great action scenes, characters, and visuals this movie is a fun action movie that I will gladly put on the ultimate shelf.
What a good week! Every review this week made it onto the ultimate shelf (which is a very rare occurrence on this blog). Next week I will be reviewing the Tyler Childers concert I'm going to and will also be reviewing Little Town Hero which is releasing on the Switch on the 16th. Gotta finish Concrete Genie first though! Keep going on adventures!
