Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? Well, we made it to the end of 2020. Lots of changes this year and lots of delayed releases but we made it through! You know what that means, it's time for the Top 10 lists of the year! Full disclosure. I missed some movies (Tenet, Monster Hunter, Wonder Woman 1984) but I feel like other than that I have a pretty comprehensive list of the year! Each one will have a small picture and a little blurb about why I liked them. So here we go, the top 10 Movies of 2020!
Top 10 Movies
10. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is a fun and charming Netflix film starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams that features great characters, scenery, and music. The cast was fantastic and "Ja Ja Ding Dong" is the best song from a movie this year!
9. Wolfwalkers is a beautifully animated film on Apple TV+ deep into Irish mythology and deep allegories. Themes of embracing change, religion, and what it means to be in a cage are peppered throughout a beautifully animated world.
8. Mulan is a Disney+ premier access live action remake from the 1998 classic. It has done a fine job of recreating the story without talking dragons and characters singing during a war. The changes to the story were welcome but didn't meet the standards of the blockbuster it was supposed to be.
7. Hamilton is a Disney+ exclusive performance and filming of the 2015 Musical "Hamilton" by Lin Manuel Miranda. The original cast shines in this fantastically adapted filming of the Broadway stage show. I felt strange putting a show from 2015 on this list but this was my first viewing and I know it was for a lot of people over.
6.The Lovebirds is a Netflix film starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae who have fantastic chemistry on screen even though they're going through a bit of rough patch. The direction of Michael Showalter also shines here in an insane and zany adventure!
5. The Devil All the Time is a dark and intense story about a family's trials in the heart of Appalachia. The all star cast (Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgard, Haley Bennett, and Sebastian Stan) creates various intricate relationships. The movie asks the audience to deal with tough issues that plague some our country's population today. Netflix outdid themselves on this film.
4. Soul is Pixar's newest film released on Christmas Day on Disney+. Even though the film's themes rubbed me the wrong way, I cannot discredit the music, animation, and voice acting that went into this film. This film hasn't have a full review but I have a lot of feelings about it that I know a lot of people will disagree with.
3. The One and Only Ivan is a Disney+ film with an all star cast and a touching story. Some of the biggest faces in Hollywood star in this film. Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Chaka Khan, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, and Danny Devito. A charming story with tons a heart truly makes this a great family film.
2. Onward is one of the only films I saw in theaters this year. Pixar's strongest showing this year features the voices of Tom Holland and Chris Pratt in a family film that is truly about family. In a fantasy world based in a fantasy world the concept of this movie and the emotional gut punches that pepper this film create a masterpiece in storytelling.
1. Call of the Wild is the best film of the year. It truly did not get the praise it deserved this year. Even though the CGI was a bit odd the adaptation of the novel by Jack London, the acting of Harrison Ford, and visual story telling was just fantastic. This is the definitive version of the story and should be studied from years to come.
Well there you have it! The Top 10 films of 2020! It was a strange year with a lot of cancellations and reschedules but we did quite a few gems! I can't wait to see what next year brings!
All the Best, Ross
