Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This year brought us a ton of music and great albums but sometimes a specific song transcends the album that it's on and sometimes artists release singles. So this is the list celebrating those gems on mediocre albums and singles artists have released throughout the year!
Top 10 Songs of 2020
10. "When You Get That Feeling" by Nate Bo is a debut song from one of my good friends. It's a solid jam with an R&B vibe and wicked vibraphone solo. I used to play music with Nate in college and I'm glad to see him with a successful first song! I can't wait to see what's next for Nate in his career!
9. "Twice Your Size" by Declan McKenna is off his sophomore album titled "Zeros". Although the album suffered from production issues that muddied up the brilliant lyrics, this is the few songs that didn't suffer from that. The energy that this song brings to the table is exactly what this album needs and the rock world needs in general.
8. "Earthquake Weather" by The Dirty Heads is the only song released by the group in 2020 and it does not disappoint. The flow this band has is undeniable and their career has been so spectacular that they have made it onto my Band Bucket List. One of the 2 songs released this year for their album releasing in March of 2021. This gives me hope for the album being an absolute banger!
7. "Silverfish" by Corey Taylor is one of the shining sports on his solo album this year. The guitar riff begins the song beautifully and it just gets better from there. It's diffidently the most profound song on the album and it deserves a spot on this list for sure!
6. "Grow Up" by April Keez is the debut single from my good friend April. I've heard this song performed many times over many summers and was so happy to hear the finished product! Her lyrics are beautiful and the message is profound but the song doesn't bog you down like you would think the lyrics would. I can't wait see what's next for April!
5. "Comes Then Goes" by Pearl Jam is the best song from their 11th studio album. It's such a simple song with haunting melodies and a beautiful guitar riff. The simplicity of the song stuck out on the hard hitting rest of the album. It was a breath of fresh air on the album and proves Pearl Jam aren't done yet.
4. "The One" by Taylor Swift is the first song off the first album she released this year (yes, she released 2 albums which were both solid). The chorus is fantastically crafted with beautiful phrasing and proves she is a great songwriter. What I like about Taylor Swift is she has grown up were audience. She started with cheesy love songs, went through her party phase, and now she's ready to settle down. I can't wait to see where her journey leads us.
3. "Deep Deep Feeling" by Paul McCartney is the 8 minute masterpiece off the album with the best cover of 2020. "Deep Deep Feeling" takes the concept of 1 refrain floating in and out of space and time throughout 8 minutes of perfectly produced music. I love hearing how the refrain changes meanings and tones as its sang over various styles. What a great way to prove that this 78 year old isn't done yet!
2. "Tokyo Driftin" by Glass Animals (feat. Denzel Curry) proves that genre is just word and that if a song is wonderfully crafted it doesn't need to be categorized. The two sections of the song don't feel disjointed but instead leads the song into unknown territory. Once the second part comes in all bets are off! It's time to rock! Denzel Curry's verse is fantastic! His prose and flow are so varied and when it pushes you into the final chorus the song is on fire!
1. "Gasoline" by HAIM is the song that made me fall in HAIM. I was convinced of their brilliance until this song hit me in the face and made me listen to it more times than I probably should have. Danielle's groove and vocals mixed with Alana's harmonies and riff overtop Este's killer bass licks is fantastic. Their live from home version really kicked it up a notch with Rostam Batmanglu and the pictured Tonight Show performance. I've been saying for the past 5 years that "The future of rock is female" and this is proof.
All the Best, Ross
