S3 Ep. 5- May Flowers

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What’s your adventure? May brought a ton of new music, a few games, and a few TV shows! Unfortunately I haven’t gotten to Cruella yet considering it just came out and I am spending time with family but it will be added to the end of the year list, if it’s any good! So anyways, lets get into the Top 10 list of May 2021!

10. Subnautica: Below Zero is a sequel game in a franchise that I’ve overlooked and shouldn’t have. Even though I only played the first 10 minutes of this game I think it’ll be great game and deserve to be on the list.

9. January Flower by Matt Kearney a solid album from an underrated artist but nothing really here to get super excited about. I’ve listened to a bit of his music before and thought he was more of an acoustic artist but this one felt more processed and poppy. I feel like he fell into the trap that many artists have fallen into the past year of trying to sound “popular” rather than making your own music. Some notable tracks are “Pontiac” and “Grand Canyon”

8. SOUR by Olivia Rodrigo is the debut album from the Disney Channel star... and yes the album sounds exactly like you think it sounds. I really like her sound and her voice but I couldn’t get past the fact that every song talked about the same thing. I’m sorry your ex boyfriend found a new girlfriend right after you breakup, people deal with things differently so get over it! Anyways, some highlighted tracks are “Deja Vu” and “Jealousy, Jealousy”.

7. Daddy’s Home by St. Vincent released three songs before the release and had me convinced that this was going to be the album of the year. Unfortunately those were the only three songs on the album that I liked. So this has been moved to the lower end of the list. Those three songs were “Pay Your Way In Pain”, “Melting of the Sun” and “Down”.

6. The Bad Batch is a Star Wars Disney+ original which began streaming on May 4th. It follows the Bad Batch which was a team of defective clones introduced in season 7 of The Clone Wars. The show is decent enough and has some really great cinematography and characters but my issue is the show’s tone. Sometimes it’s a really intense action show, sometimes it’s a kids show, and sometimes its a Sci-Fi show. We’ll see how the show progresses.

5. Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is another Disney+ original that is a reboot of the Mighty Ducks movie trilogy. The season finale was just released and the ending was... interesting. Not to spoil anything, but I felt the finale actually took away everything the show built up. It’s a really fun and corny show but I think it could have ended much differently and more cathartic.

4. Resident Evil: Village is one of the first big “Next Gen” games that I played on Stadia. It’s a fantastic game for visual storytelling! The characters and settings are crazy and out of the ordinary that goes back to the classic Resident Evil style and it feels like a horror game rather than an action game which is exactly what it should be!

3. Mythic Quest season 2 is absolute gold. It’s characters are the driving force behind the story of this show and that really shows in Season 2. The latest episode with the signing of the papers really shows how well this show knows and loves it’s characters... it’s also hilarious! I can’t wait to see where this show goes next!

2. Famicon Detective Clubs had two releases on the same day so I decided to bring them together on the list. Both are games that remastered from the NES in the 1980’s that were originally released only in Japan. These two visual novels follow a teenager with amnesia who becomes a detective to solve some mysteries. I played the “Girl Who Stands Behind” which was the start of his story and first big mystery solved and then then the “Missing Heir” which answers more questions about the main character. I preferred the girl who stands behind because the setting a mystery were a little more believable and more creepy which I really loved! These two are diffidently contenders for the game of the year!

1. Scaled and Icy by 21 Pilots is the band’s 6th studio album and sound wildly different from anything else they’ve ever released. It’s a fantastic album that shows Tyler Joseph’s writing chops and Josh Dunn’s drumming chops. With some songs sounding like a Beach Boys shuffle, others sounding like modern rock music, and some sounding like hip hop it really shows the band’s ability to change. Some of the highlight tracks are “Good Day”, “Shy Away”, “The Outside”, and “Never Take It”. If you wrote off this band because you’re sick of hearing “Stressed Out”, I would consider giving them a second chance!

There we go with May! Hopefully I’ll catch up with Cruella and new albums from Dispatch and DMX. But they will be accounted for in the end of the year Best OF 2021 list!

                                All the Best, Ross

El Deafo

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This week's adventure takes into the world of Cece Bell's graphic novel turned into an Apple TV+ series titled "El Deafo". It is a semi autobiographical tale of her early life and dealing with her struggles of being deaf. The series also features original music from Waxahatchee a very underrated artist in my opinion! So let's get started on our review and head to Virginia to meet Cece Bell in "El Deafo" First off I would like to say the character designs are super cute and enjoyable to watch. I love the design of the rabbits and the clean lines of the show are very pleasant to look at. The tone of the show is very colorful yet muted and pastel which I really enjoy.  Now I won't give away the plot but as you can guess from the title and the poster that this is the story of how Cece lost her hearing. It is great to see a story for children addressing this topic for them to understand the issue ...

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? Today's adventure takes us deep into the walls and underneath the ground to the land of Fraggle Rock. But this isn't the first time we've been here, we remember this place from long ago and it's time to go back. A reboot of a series that ended in 1987 is just what Apple TV+ needs right? Let's find out! Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock has 13 episodes in it's first season and it's just as charming as you remember. The muppets look as good as ever, the characters a charming, and the world building in this show is actually quite good! Each episode has a fun adventure with a pretty solid through line of exploring "outer space" which is just our world. There are some pretty great jokes that go along with this too. In the pilot episode one of the characters gets attacked by a dog, when telling his friends about it he says "I was attacked by the most vicious space monster" and it cuts to t...

"Covers" by Cat Power

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This adventure takes us to many genres of music covered by Cat Power! From Iggy Pop to Lana Del Rey to Billie Holiday, this album takes to many genres but somehow feels stale through Cat Power's style.  I knew this was a cover album and was excited to hear all the different songs sung in a new style. Unfortunately these songs are more than just the surface songs and singles. These are lesser known songs from big artists. I loved trying to guess who's song it was and then looking it up afterwards. Even though the artists she covers are from all sorts of genres this album is such a drag to listen to. The 12 songs slog on for 43 minutes and never feel like it's going anywhere. It's like she took the personality from the different artists but not any of the passion. I felt very bored listening to the songs. Two of the songs did make it onto my 2022 playlist including "Pa Pa Power" and "White Mustang...
