Welcome back to Thrak Attack, what's your adventure? This month took us to some pretty weird places such as the TVA, the mushroom kingdom, a garage for game building, Washington Heights, and the Nowhere Generation. Here is the top 10 adventures we went on in June!
10. The Bad Batch is a solid show on Disney+ that struggles to know who it's audience is. The more I watch the more I dislike it and the more I want to punch Omega right in the teeth. The dark tones clash with the child friendly plots and it just doesn't work after 10 episodes in.
9. "Nowhere Generation" by Rise Against is not a great album... but the title track is killer! You can really tell when listening that song is where most of their energy went for this album. They lyrics are mesmerizing and keep you intrigued and the chorus is a wordy anthem that makes you want to listen again and again. It is contender for song of the year, however the album is not.
8. "Back of My Mind" by H.E.R. is an R&B delight. If music could be an ice cream cone, this would be it! Such a fun sound with such meaningful lyrics and content. The songs that really hit me are "We Made It", "Cheat Code", and "Hold On". I've heard of H.E.R. before but now I can officially say that I am a fan.
7. Game Builder Garage for the Nintendo Switch is a great way to learn the basics of coding. This game teaches you how to build games through coding and cute characters and allows you to create your own (if you can sit through all the hand holding), It's a lot of information to take in but once you understand it the possibilities will be endless!
6. In the Heights is a movie based on the broadway play written by Lin Manuel Miranda. The movie shines with casting, costuming, cinematography, choreography, and music (of course); but it lacks in story and focus. There are a lot of moving plot lines and a lot of the major ones are sung so sometimes you can miss it. Also the music is very similar to Hamilton due to it being the same composer and after hearing that music shoved down my throat for 5 years now, I'm a little over that style. Other than that, it was a solid film!
5. Sweet Tooth is a Netflix series based on an obscure DC comic. The plot is pretty ridiculous but the perfect casting makes it believable. The interconnecting storylines are fantastic to watch come together and the visuals are breath taking. My only complaint is, I wish Will Forte was in it for longer. That's all I'm saying!
4. Luca is the newest Pixar film and the second one to release on Disney+. It's a cute movie with perfect visuals and a decent plot but I felt like most of it was given away in the trailers. It also felt a whole lot like The Little Mermaid at times. I did feel a lot of subtext within this world all about the discrimination of the LGBT community in Italy in this film but I'll have you make that judgement on your own!
3. Mario Golf Super Rush for the Nintendo Switch is a delightful sports game packed to the brim with content! Any possible way that you can play golf (other than disc golf and soccer golf, but those would be cool DLC! I'm just saying Nintendo should make it happen!) you can play in this game. You got traditional golf, RPG golf, Speed Golf, and Arena Golf all within a neat and fun package!
2. Mythic Quest (Season 2) on Apple TV+ did not end on a high note for me. A lot of this season was either setting up Season 3 or adding more backstory to these characters. Episode 6 and 7 are a perfect example of how to build character and backstory and add depth and meaning to your story. This show is a masterclass in character building.
1. Loki is a Disney+ original series that continues the story arcs of the MCU. It is the third Disney+ MCU show (the first being WandaVision and the second being The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). Even though those shows were fantastic, this show really changes the fabric of the MCU. Making everything leading up to this show feel like child's play and adding "the next big thing" for the MCU to tackle in a palatable way for everyone watching.
