Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This adventure takes us to the world of Johnny Test and back to the year 2005. Little me was cycling through all of the cartoon channels until a new show came onto the screen, a show called Johnny Test. It wasn't my favorite show but it was enjoyable enough to watch at the time. I was 14 years old at the time so maybe a little too old but the sci-fi and adventure aspects of the show did keep my interest! Last year, Netflix picked up the show to create new seasons after a 7 year hiatus and now season 2 of that revitalization has arrived. So here is my review of the second second season of Johnny Test!
The premise is simple enough, and very similar to Jimmy Neutron, except Johnny Test is not the genius but instead it's his older sisters Susan and Mary. He has a talking dog, of course, and he has one smart parent and one insane parent. So it's a pretty typical cartoon family. The catch is that Johnny is not the best kid and often gets into trouble which Susan and Mary create some crazy science thing that gets him out of it.
Every episode is pretty much that premise and Johnny always learns a lesson, although not always the right one in my opinion. Obviously this is not a fantastic show but some of the premises are pretty cool! In one episode Johnny gets in trouble at school and they make a robot mom to go to the parent/teacher conference. Another episode is about a virtual reality video games with all of their friends. A third episode, Johnny gets put into a book which is a blatant Harry Potter reference. In all of the episode something fun happens and it does do a great job of keeping the diversity of gadgets and settings throughout each episode.
Unfortunately because there are no connecting story arcs, the show does get boring after a while. Especially when you watch multiple in a row to review on your blog... I had fun watching these episodes but it's just too repetitive to keep my interest as a 30 year old. Maybe if I was 14 again I would appreciate the show more! Another thing I noticed was that Johnny gets in trouble a lot, even before the experiments, but his behavior never changes and there is rarely any consequences to that specifically. So I feel as though that is sending a wrong message to kids that will be watching the show.
When reviewing shows I have a 10 point rating scale with stars awarded to length, setting, characters, costuming, dialogue, plot, music, themes, sound design, and overall feeling. Johnny Test (season 2) gets stars for length (20 episodes), setting, characters, plot, and overall feeling.
Johnny Test on Netflix (Season 2) gets 5 out of 10 stars.
All the Best, Ross
