Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? Todays adventure takes us to 1938 Europe on the brink of World War II. Two friends who graduated Oxford together have gone their separate ways. One is from Germany and lives in London to gain information. The other is the secretary for the Prime Minister in London. Sounds like a fast paced action film right? If you said yes you would be wrong.
In such a tense time in history, this movie does a great job at creating suspense but doesn't fully deliver on the payoff of all that suspense. With a 131 minute run time with the first half of the movie spoken in whispers, it creates the suspense but the loud parts of the film aren't the resolutions. There are a few blow ups between the characters which do act as huge plot points, like one of the flashbacks at the pub in Germany, but that develops characters and not the story.
I know this film is based on a novel called "Munich" by Robert Harris and I bet the pacing of this novel is better than the film. I liked a lot of things in this film such as the plot, setting, and the acting is pretty solid. But for whatever reason this film dragged on for me. Maybe it wasn't the right time or place to watch it for me but it just didn't hit home. Usually January is a dumping ground for bad films but this film is not half bad, it just wasn't for me.
When reviewing movies I give out stars for cinematography, set design, plot, costuming, music, dialogue, pacing, themes, acting and overall feeling. Munich- Edge of War gets stars for set design, plot, dialogue, themes, and acting.
Munich- Edge of War receives 5 out of 10 stars.
