May 2022

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What’s your adventure? This month, I know it’s a little late, has been filled with lots of travel adventures but also a few games, music, and TV shows thrown in there too! It’s bee sort of a light month with the end of the school year but we’ll stretch it to get a top 10 adventures of May 2022!

10. “Explosions” by Three Days Grace is a generic rock album. Nothing stood out about this album to me but nothing was so bad I had to turn it off. It’s just there and it sounds like rock music. That’s why it’s the last adventure on this list.

9. “Misery Made Me” by Silverstein is the follow up to their amazing 2020 album which made the Top 10 of the year! Although this album does have some substance with songs like “Our Song” and “Misery” and it does have some thought out themes, it just falls short of a great album.

8. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness was not a great movie and by that standard it was a terrible marvel movie. After just seeing the superior multiverse movie a month earlier I was supremely disappointed in the amount of madness in the movie. Sam Raimi did not fit with the vibe of Doctor Strange and aside from the Scarlett Witch being fantastic and a few other great cameos.,. This movie was pretty lame.

7. Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers was more of a madness than the previous movies with countless references to other media (including outlet stores) along with a bonkers cast, and a setting that made me more uncomfortable than any other film.

6. Pittsburgh is such a cool city to drive into but unfortunately once you’re there once, there’s not much to do. My wife has never been there so driving through the tunnel straight into the city was a sight to see for her but we quickly had to get moving the next morning. Fortunately, we had time to stop at Bruegers bagels!

5. Candy is a Hulu murder mystery series based on a true story. I am not usually a fan of this one but Jessica Biel does such a great job as the title character and the way the show is framed does a great job of keeping the pieces apart until the very end.

4. Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is an Apple Arcade and/or Switch game and although I think it would be fine on the switch, I am glad I played on my phone. It’s one of the few games that actually works better on a touch screen. The gameplay is a simple endless runner using your momentum to swing through the trees but there is a story. As you swing and slide through the rainforest the background slowly shows signs of human life. I don’t want to give the plot of the game away but you should diffidently check it out and make sure to play all the way through!

3. Under the Banner of Heaven is another murder mystery this time on FX. Again I’m not usually a murder mysteries but this time it was Andrew Garfield who pulled me in! Again, not my style but I recognize that it is a solid show which brings it up to the Top 3 spot!

2. “Dance Fever” by Florence + the Machine is not her best album but even her worst album is kick ass! The only reason why I say it is her worst album is because it is not an album for me. This album is written for women and I am not a woman. I love some of the songs such as “Choreomania”, “Dream Girl Evil”, and “Morning Elvis” but they are not written for me. It is for sure a great album though and one that you should check out!

1. Obi Wan Kenobi on Disney+ is probably the most anticipated series of the year and the 2 episode premier does not disappoint. With a few bad acting bits, the plot of this show is exactly what people were asking for and promises to deliver on one of the biggest finales in any Star Wars shows to date!

All the Best, Ross

El Deafo

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This week's adventure takes into the world of Cece Bell's graphic novel turned into an Apple TV+ series titled "El Deafo". It is a semi autobiographical tale of her early life and dealing with her struggles of being deaf. The series also features original music from Waxahatchee a very underrated artist in my opinion! So let's get started on our review and head to Virginia to meet Cece Bell in "El Deafo" First off I would like to say the character designs are super cute and enjoyable to watch. I love the design of the rabbits and the clean lines of the show are very pleasant to look at. The tone of the show is very colorful yet muted and pastel which I really enjoy.  Now I won't give away the plot but as you can guess from the title and the poster that this is the story of how Cece lost her hearing. It is great to see a story for children addressing this topic for them to understand the issue ...

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? Today's adventure takes us deep into the walls and underneath the ground to the land of Fraggle Rock. But this isn't the first time we've been here, we remember this place from long ago and it's time to go back. A reboot of a series that ended in 1987 is just what Apple TV+ needs right? Let's find out! Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock has 13 episodes in it's first season and it's just as charming as you remember. The muppets look as good as ever, the characters a charming, and the world building in this show is actually quite good! Each episode has a fun adventure with a pretty solid through line of exploring "outer space" which is just our world. There are some pretty great jokes that go along with this too. In the pilot episode one of the characters gets attacked by a dog, when telling his friends about it he says "I was attacked by the most vicious space monster" and it cuts to t...

"Covers" by Cat Power

Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? This adventure takes us to many genres of music covered by Cat Power! From Iggy Pop to Lana Del Rey to Billie Holiday, this album takes to many genres but somehow feels stale through Cat Power's style.  I knew this was a cover album and was excited to hear all the different songs sung in a new style. Unfortunately these songs are more than just the surface songs and singles. These are lesser known songs from big artists. I loved trying to guess who's song it was and then looking it up afterwards. Even though the artists she covers are from all sorts of genres this album is such a drag to listen to. The 12 songs slog on for 43 minutes and never feel like it's going anywhere. It's like she took the personality from the different artists but not any of the passion. I felt very bored listening to the songs. Two of the songs did make it onto my 2022 playlist including "Pa Pa Power" and "White Mustang...
