Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? I'm sorry about the lack of reviews but this summer was a doozy with travel and family time so there hasn't been much to review but what I did explore was amazing! I also caught up on 2 movies which will not be reviewed on this list but will be accounted into the end of the year Top 10 lists and those are "Death on the Nile" and "Downton Abbey: A New Era". With all of the fluff out of the way lets get into the reviews! Here are the Top 10 list of Summer 2022!
10. "Meet the Moonlight" by Jack Johnson is a fine album that just doesn't have much going for it. It sounds great and has some good songs but the only one that really stands out to me is the single "One Step Ahead". I've always liked Jack Johnson and his album's up until "To the Sea" had a logical progression of style; ever since then it has felt stagnant.
9. Elvis was the most recent biopic in a long string of famous musician biopics. I enjoyed that they told the story through the Colonel and enjoyed seeing the truth of his story unfold throughout the music. I loved how you would hear Elvis songs in the film being sung by African American musicians and then Elvis was performing them (because he stole most of that music) but there was something about the gambling casino theme in the cinematography that just made my head spin. I also felt like the costuming and makeup design was very inconsistent. A solid movie with a lot of problems hiding beneath the surface.
8. Ms. Marvel is the next Disney+ installment of the MCU that ran from June to July. It was a solid origin story for Kamala Kahn with amazing characters, a decent plot, and some very important things for the MCU moving forward. The issue was the lack of consistency throughout the series. Some episodes were really well done and thought out and others were sloppy and cheesy like the raid of the high school. I am very excited to see Kamala Kahn going forward and to see more of her connections to the larger MCU.
7. Thor: Love and Thunder is the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Thor's 4th solo outing. I thought this movie was really fun, unfortunately, at the expense of Thor. He's the main character who has had multiple films to develop and they made him into a joke. Jane Foster was amazing in this film and I was excited to see her return. Another returning character was Lady Sif... who did nothing in this movie. Anyways, I wish they went with a different direction with Thor's character and he ended up a little bit different but we will see because Thor will return!
6. "Closure/Continuation" by Porcupine Tree was an album that I was not expecting to be as enjoyable as it is! I'm not the biggest metal fan but this album is way more Prog Rock than metal so I enjoy it a lot more. The songs are massive and meaty and the talent is immense from these guys! Such an enjoyable album if you really need to sink your teeth into it. My only issue is it all blends together and not a single track really stays with me. Maybe that's a plus but maybe a minus as well.
5. Obi Wan Kenobi is the newest Star Wars story to be told on Disney+ and it follows the title character on an adventure between episodes III and IV. The acting is spot on, the plot is fantastic, but sometimes the action was very inconsistent. I loved little Leia but it was very unbelievable that she could outrun 3 fully grown adults who were shooting at her, and that happened twice in the series!
4. "Entering Heaven Alive" by Jack White is the 5th solo Jack White album and the second one this year! I just bought this album and the previous album "Fear of the Dawn" on vinyl and I am still piecing together the parallels of these two albums. I love how he divided both of these albums up into 2 very distinctive styles. This is a more subdued album then the other but I think as a whole this album is way more consistent!
3. "Philadelphia Mississippi" by G. Love shows just how talented and versatile this artist is! From hip-hop to rock to bluegrass to blues, this guy can do it all! Wicked guitar solos, slick beats, raunchy harmonica solos, and a smooth rap flow gives this guy the edge coupled with one of the most impressive featured artists throughout the whole album makes this one of his best! Unfortunately for him and a lot of people out there, news about new laws started in Mississippi gave this album some bad press but I hope you will enjoy it all the same!
2. Stray is a beautifully crafted adventure platforming game for the Playstation 5. The world you are dropped into (literally) is so rich in detail, personality, and hints of the full story making this one of the best environmental storytelling I have seen in a game. Unfortunately that is ended about an hour in when you meet a robot pal who can tell you exactly where to go. It was fun exploring the world as a cat and finding out the story from just enjoying the world! It also looks a little rough around the edges seeing as it's a PS5 and PS4 game but it's clearly suited for PS4.
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for the Nintendo Switch is one of the biggest games of the year (and I'm not talking about hype like God of War: Ragnarok and Elden Ring). I'm talking the scope of this game is massive! The map, the story, the amount of character custimization, the amount of combat options and features, the characters, the world building, and even the score is all provided in such a grand stature you just have to go all in on this game! I have not found a single issue with this game yet and I'm 8 hours in and I've only scratched the surface!
