Welcome back to Thrak Attack! We're closing out the year with our last regular post of 2018. We are getting into Top 10's of 2018 territory and I also still have one more movie to review. So let's get the ball rolling there has been a ton of news this week! So let's get started!
NEWS!
-The first look at the Sonic the Hedgehog film looks horrendous and I can't wait shovel popcorn into my mouth as I watch this terrible film!
-The 7 new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been announced and include The Cure, Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, Roxy Music, and The Zombies. None of my favorites but all great choices.
-Tony Hawk finally releases an mobile game for iOS and Android titled "Tony Hawk Skate Jam". This makes logical sense for the series.
-Police respond to a noise complaint and then joined in the Smash Bros game that caused it. That's how you do it!
-Pokemon Go player vs. player battles are finally live but I have not had a chance to check it out!
-Pixar's next big film in 2020 will be called "Onward" and will feature the voices of Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, and Julia Luis-Dreyfus.
-Epic games (the creators of Fortnite) are being sued for using dances in their games without permission. Hopefully the hype will die down finally.
REVIEWS!
Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse is an animated Sony film in association with Marvel that features a unique animation style and various spider-people from different universes. It's an interesting take on a classic story and creates a fun environment for the Spider-Man storyline. Let's talk about 3 big things about this movie the animation, voice acting, and story.
The animation style is unique and lively and is some of the the best animation and aesthetics I've seen in a bit. The characters and sizes are so stylized such as the Kingpin and the Green Goblin. There are also some really funny bits with sound effects being written on the screen along with thought bubbles/panels that adds to the comic book aesthetic. My only issue with it was sometimes it felt like some of the slides of the animation was missing and it felt a little jagged. There were also parts that were very blurry and I felt like I was in a 3D movie without the glasses. There were a few moments in passing that weren't a big deal but there was one scene in particular when Miles and Peter were talking that was extremely blurry and uncomfortable. I actually turned around at one point to see if we were the only ones without glasses on. But other than that, the animation was on point!
The characters were all fun and well developed with the time we were allotted there were 7 Spider-people in total. There was Peter Parker who was the standard Peter Parker and was completely with it, Miles Morales who was the newest spider-person, Peter B. Parker (voiced by Jake Johnson, and the best character) was the middle aged classic Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy as Spider-girl (also awesome), Penny Parker as the odd Japanese mech suit Spider-Man?, Spider-Noir voiced by Nick Cage who was a black white Spider-Man, and finally Peter Porker also known as Spider-Pig who was voiced by John Mulaney. The voice acting is really what made me love this movie. Jake Johnson's performance was perfect because the character perfectly embodied his voice and vice versa.
The plot was loaded with information and some emotional sections such as Mile's father's one sided conversation. It never felt overstuffed with information or characters but it was crowded. Although the story worked as a film, I truly believe it would have been more effective as a TV show. An animated show in this style where you actually get to explore these dimensions and characters and delve more into their plot lines would make this film much more enjoyable. Adding to the characters and plots by adding more time with them would work much better.
So is this the best Spider-man film? It's close to the first two Sam Raimi Spider-man movies but I have a special place in my heart for those films. So is this going on my ultimate movie shelf? Probably not but I did enjoy it. It was a good movie but not a great movie.
So sometime this weekend there will be an extra Aquaman post with my review of the newest DC film. And on Wednesday I will have the Top 10's of 2018 posted featuring the Top 10 Songs, Albums, Movies, and Video Games. Thank you all for reading I hope you keep reading and enjoying the blog!
