Welcome back to Thrak Attack! What's your adventure? We finally made it to the end of 2021 and what a crazy year it was! The return to the movie theater was a highlight of the year and there were some great movies to be seen! Here are the Top 10 movies of the year with a little review of each!
10. The United States vs. Billie Holiday was the first good movie of the year, only because January is a dumping ground for horrible movies (I'm looking at you "Music"). This movie had a great soundtrack, message, and acting. It also was an important movie to bring awareness to what this historic musician did for music and the African American community.
9. Cruella was the first movie I saw in theaters after the pandemic so it has a special place in my heart. It was not the best film and I was a little wary of it being a sequel that glorified a puppy murderer but it was a solid film. The cast was fantastic and the soundtrack was great but the best part of the film was obviously the costuming due to the fact it was all about fashion.
8. Jungle Cruise was one of the most fun times I've had at the cinema this year. It wasn't a great film but it was an absolute blast! Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt were bot the great but Jack Whitehall really made the film! The references to the attraction were super fun to find and there was even a twist I did not see coming!
7. Inside is not the traditional film that I would usually put on this list but it made such an impact this year and did so much for what a film could actually be that I had to put it on. The real reason this is on the list is because it was all Bo Burnum. The lighting, recording, acting, production, editing, music, everything in this film was done by Bo. That fact alone makes this one of the best films of the year!
6. Shang Chi: And the Legend of the Ten Rings proved everyone wrong. Simu Liu shines as the title character and shows that the MCU is not dying, it's thriving. This film fixes a lot of the race issues plaguing the Marvel comics and the MCU and shines a light on how they are fixing them. The rings are a super cool weapon and I'm excited to see how they are utilized in the future and where the organization "The Ten Rings" goes from here.
5. Encanto is the best Disney musical since Tangled and has finally mastered the formula of a film without a villain. The music was great and voice acting was fantastic. Stephanie Beatriz's voice acting and inflections while singing are just fantastic. The animation is fun and colorful, and the Casita as a character makes the whole movie fun, inventive and captivating!
4. 007: No Time to Die is the final bond film in the Daniel Craig era and it's one of the best films of the year. I know a lot of people are complaining that it doesn't feel like a 007 film but I think it's the best of his films. The way the film and characters are written do a lot for the series and the fact that James Bond is up against 007 in this one is a fun twist!
3. Tick, Tick... Boom! is a musical about a musical told through a musical. The story follows Andrew Laurson, the writer of Rent, on his journey to becoming a successful musical writer. Andrew Garfield stars and wows in his first singing role ever! He does such a fantastic job in this role and the direction Lin Manuel Miranda took with using Laurson's "Tick, Tick... Boom!" musical as a framing device for the film's story is fantastic!
2. Spider-Man: No Way Home is the newest film in the MCU and his the 9th Spider-Man feature film. The film wraps up Tom Holland's story as Spider-Man and brings back few familiar faces. I haven't given a full review of this film only because it's so recent and I do not want to spoil it but it is a fantastic film that will have you cheering in the theater!
1. CODA, in my opinion, is the most important film of the year. The representation of the deaf community in this film is fantastic and shows what they go through every day. When we watched it on Apple TV+ we had the subtitles on and they showed what they were saying through ASL, but I can't imagine how good the film would be without that and having to interpret what they were saying the entire film.
